Following the Leader

As we are all still patiently waiting during our present state of living with Corvid 19 I’m finding family connections are even more important to me now especially in moments when I feel stuck

It has been the greatest blessing to have so many technology options available to us aside from the usual phone communication to stay in touch. I get to speak to both my children on a regular basis but it’s my special needs daughter that I feel the need to communicate with the most on a daily basis.

During our daily conversations I’m learning to follow her lead. She has time and time again surprised me with what she can do on her own. However, this is different and I was most worried about how she would be able to handle the disruption in our regular pattern of visiting and spending time together. She has learned how to handle the pandemic with great understanding and a lot of patience. She realizes that our normal way of life has temporally changed and she has accepted it. She knows the sacrifice that we all need to make will be worth it and the end result will get us back to spending family time together once again.

Although this is a new challenge for us all, the most important take away I’ve learned from this trying time is to not underestimate what my daughter’s capacity is to handle change. Instead, as it turns out it is more beneficial for me to stay open to not placing limits on what she would be best fitted to handle.
